Recently, the first set of high manganese steel marine fuel tanks in China, built with the new high manganese steel of Wugang Company of HBIS, has been operating safely on board for more than 20,000 nautical miles. This is the first time that HBIS's high manganese steel has been applied on a real ship in China, marking the leap from basic material research to domestic engineering application for the new generation of high-performance, ultra-low temperature domestic high manganese steel, which is of milestone significance for the promotion and application of high manganese steel.
High manganese steel is a pure austenitic alloy steel with a manganese content of 22% to 25% and no nickel. It has good low-temperature toughness, high ductility, and high strength. Compared with the 9Ni steel used in traditional LNG storage tanks, the high manganese steel developed by Wugang this time can help downstream customers reduce manufacturing costs while ensuring the product's low-temperature strength, toughness, fatigue resistance, and other properties and has broad market prospects.
Wugang is market- and customer-oriented, giving full play to its advantages in wide and thick plate production technology, continuously increasing the development of ship steel products, leading the upgrading of ship steel materials, and enhancing market competitiveness and brand influence. In order to meet the stringent requirements of customers, Wugang actively forms a joint R&D team with customers and relevant classification societies and research institutes, innovatively carries out R&D work, and breaks through a series of technical bottlenecks such as high manganese steel material performance regulation, welding material R&D matching, and tank forming preparation. During the production process, key technical personnel from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the rolling mill were organized to form an R&D team to clarify key process nodes and points to pay attention to and provide support for the smooth launch of products. In addition, product standards and application guidelines were issued, which ultimately achieved the original innovation of the entire industrial chain of high manganese steel in my country from materials to applications and completed the first domestic actual ship application.
