Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic. Ferritic stainless steel is magnetic stainless steel. Although this stainless steel is magnetic, it does not mean it will rust. This steel type does not contain Ni, so the price is relatively cheap.

Finally, types of stainless steel, such as martensite systems, dual-phase systems, and precipitation hardening systems, may have slight magnetism. The structures containing more ferrite will have greater magnetism.

Stainless steel is a high-alloy steel material containing a variety of alloy elements. According to different structures, stainless steel can be divided into various types, such as austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, dual-phase, and precipitation hardening systems.

The most commonly used stainless steel on the market is austenitic stainless steel, commonly known as 304. Austenitic stainless steel has excellent processability, weldability, and corrosion resistance. This stainless steel is non-magnetic.

In recent years, the cost has increased due to the rising price of Ni raw materials. Therefore, people have increased the utilization of 200-series SUS201 (17Cr-4.5Ni-6.5Mn-0.2N), which replaces Ni with Mn, and the development of resource-saving stainless steels such as high-corrosion-resistant iron-based SUS. This 200 series stainless steel is also austenitic stainless steel and non-magnetic.

The other type is ferritic stainless steel. The representative ferritic stainless steel is SUS430 (16Cr-0.05C), which is magnetic stainless steel. Although this stainless steel is magnetic, it does not mean it will rust. This steel type does not contain Ni, so the price is relatively cheap. The advantages of this type of stainless steel are good corrosion resistance, processability, and weldability.

Finally, types of stainless steel, such as martensite systems, dual-phase systems, and precipitation hardening systems, may have slight magnetism. The structures containing more ferrite will have greater magnetism.
